Sheriff Street Bridge
On 6 November 1931 the Irish Times reported a meeting of directors of
the Great Southern Railways Company [successor to the MGWR] and
deputations from the Dublin Port and Docks Board and Dublin
Corporation. Their engineers were directed to “draw up a joint plan
suggesting what had best be done”. On 19 May 1933 the Irish Times
reported that the Dublin Port and Docks Board had discussed the
funding: the Corporation offered £10,000 and the GSR £2,000. On 23
June the IT reported that the DPDB refused to contribute to the cost.
However, on 17 October 1941 the IT reported on the opening of the new
Sheriff Street drawbridge, which had cost £18,000; it was a structure
“unique of its kind in these islands”. The Lord Mayor thanked all
three bodies; the report does not say how much each contributed.
